Action on Drug and Alcohol and the Future of the Block

  • 24th July - Action on Drug and Alcohol and the Future of the Block
    • Redfern Community Centre 1-4pm.

Action on Drug and Alcohol and the Future of the Block - City of Sydney
Special Community Forum - Saturday 24th July Redfern Community Centre 1-4pm.

At the Redfern Community Forum in June Clover promised a community meeting
to discuss the broad range of Redfern Drug and Alcohol issues. This follows
from her suggestion to the Redfern Waterloo Inquiry that the area should
have a safe injecting facility and earlier comments about the need for a wet
area for alcohol consumption.

There have been strong divergent opinions expressed both within and outside
Inquiry into Redfern Waterloo about how the community should respond to drug
and alcohol problems in the area. There are strong views both for and
against the needle van and recent suggestions that Caroline Lane be closed
to stop its growing use as a shooting gallery. This forum will provide an
opportunity to have your say and listen to a range of different views on
these issues.

The mayor, councilors and City of Sydney staff will be in attendance to help
answer questions raised. As many of these issues impact especially around
the block the attached leaflet will be distributed around the block and
surrounding area to encourage local residents to attend. The meeting is
however a public forum and all interested parties are invited to attend.

Regarding the Future of the Block aspect, the Aboriginal Housing Company are
currently working towards a display and consultation on their proposals for
the block. As soon as these plans are finalised I will pass on details to
people on this email list.

The Human Services Review, RED and Redfern Waterloo Inquiry

The Human Services Review has been delayed and has not yet been received by
the RWPP. It is expected to be ready later this month and then go to State
cabinet. The delay may mean that it will not be available to the Inquiry in
time to be incorporated into their interim report. Following cabinet's
deliberations it is expected that the Review will then come back for
consultations within Government agencies so that Government Departments can
consider how they will implement the proposals. Following this process we
have been told that there will then be further meetings with agencies and
residents about the findings, recommendations and proposed Government
response.

The latest in the long delayed Draft RED Strategy is that it is hoped it
will also go to Cabinet this month so there is a clear idea of what the
Government will be prepared to support before it comes back to the community
for further consultations. Still we wait.

The Interim Report from the Legislative Council Inquiry in Redfern Waterloo
is being prepared and is to ready by 30th July. Copies will be mailed out to
all those who made submissions and it should appear on the Inquiry website
early in the first week of August.
